On May 20, the East Asia Institute (EAI) convened an expert dialogue featuring Dr. Gabriella Citroni, Chair of the United Nations Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) and Adjunct Professor of International Human Rights Law at the University of Milano-Bicocca. During the session, Dr. Citroni outlined the scope of the WGEID's mandate and the practical challenges encountered in the field. As a salient example, she discussed the difficulties in receiving reports and conducting investigations concerning enforced disappearances linked to North Korea. Noting the comparatively low ratification rate of the pertinent international convention in Asia relative to other regions, she called for greater attention and substantive support from middle powers, such as the Republic of Korea. The dialogue was attended by a panel of distinguished group of experts, including Professor Taehee Whang of Yonsei University, Research Fellow Chansong Lee of the Sejong Institute, Legal Analyst Heeseok Shin of the Transitional Justice Working Group (TJWG), and Researcher Unique Kim of the Database Center for North Korean Human Rights (NKDB), all of whom showed keen interest in the work of the WGEID. ■
