T.J Pempel discusses the Economic-Security Nexus
in Northeast Asia
On Tuesday May 13, the EAI hosted a smart talk forum with T.J Pempel, professor of Political Science at UC Berkeley, under the title of "The Economic-Security in Northeast Asia." During the forum, Pempel provided an answer to the questions of why tensions loom over East Asia, where countries are so interdependent economically and institutionally, and how the East Asian economic-security nexus will be affected by the emergence of China. Pempel also showed some of the potential benefits of multilateral institutions or what some scholars have termed as the Asian "noodle bowl," in easing some of the tensions in the region.

EAI Working Paper on the United States-China Trade Disputes over Renewable Energy
Using a two level game approach Ka Zeng analyzes causes of U.S.-China trade disputes in alternative energy, specifically solar energy. By exploring the tenets of U.S.-China bilateral trade relations and China's domestic policy in the energy sector, the paper argues that Chinese domestic opposition and the government's long-term strategy are the biggest contributing factors to the disputes that also curb the United States' influence over Chinese policy. Dr. Ka Zeng will visit EAI on June 12 to give a talk on the paper.
EAI Working Paper on Government Corruption and Citizen Response
Fiona Yap asks what motivates citizens to participate in collective action to demand government accountability for corruption By analyzing the cases of the United States, Australia, and Singapore with an experimental method, Yap reveals that citizens most likely engage in collective action when they 'lose' from corrupt actions and when they are informed that other citizens are seeking accountability. This evidence-based comparative research across a range of regime-types and cultures fills a huge gap in policy understanding and carries substantial implications for domestic and international policymaking. Dr. Fiona Yap will visit EAI on June 27 to give a talk on the paper.

New Volume on Peace and Security Studies Series Released
Trustpolitik 2.0 on the Korean Peninsula: Complex Policy of Deterrence, Engagement, and Trust edited by Young-Sun Ha was released on May 27. This marks the 20th volume of EAI's Peace and Security Studies series which explores various policy options for stabilizing East Asia's rapidly changing regional order. The volume suggests that South Korea should consider a co-evolutionary North Korean policy which combines deterrence, engagement, and trust-building in order to escape the vicious cycle of past hostility between the two Koreas and to build a sustainable peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Problems Facing The U.S. Civil Nuclear Sector: Smart Talk with George David Banks
An 'atrophying' sector? The apparent decline of the U.S. Civil nuclear sector raises many concerns for future energy security according to George David Banks. On Tuesday May 20, Banks, deputy director and senior fellow of the Nuclear Energy Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, discussed how this 'atrophy' could undermine the U.S. capacity to push for a stronger global non-proliferation agenda. Bank also suggested what role South Korea may have in bringing greater awareness of the potential severity of this problem to U.S. policymakers.
