[EAI-Belfer October Dialogue] “Exploring the Impact of the Russia-Ukraine War on South Korean Security”

East Asia Institute (EAI) and the Belfer Center at Harvard Kennedy School held a public panel discussion on the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on global security architecture with a specific focus on South Korean security. Thirteen security experts from EAI and Belfer Center exchanged their views on the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on the future of East Asian security, the implication of the war for the security dynamics in the Taiwan Strait, lessons Pyongyang learned from the war, and the role of the ROK-U.S. alliance regarding the future global and regional security order, especially amid an intensifying U.S.-China rivalry.

[ADRN Special Report] Minority Rights, Transitional Justice, and Direct Democracy in Asia: Country Cases

The Asia Democracy Research Network (ADRN) selected three topics concerning current situations and futures of democracies in Asian countries: Minority Rights, Transitional Justice and Reconciliation, and Direct Democracy. Fifteen special reports were published as fruitions of ADRN members’ research. Minority groups across Asian countries are facing growing attacks on their freedom and rights, which requires constitutional, legal, and state-led provisions such as the independent judiciary. Three nations’ history of national tragedy and its handling shows that transitional justice is still an ongoing process, and whole-of-nation actors, including the government and civil society, should be involved in it. What is necessary to advance the direct democracy mechanism is an improvement of the quality and range of citizen engagement and coexistence with a representative democracy system.
