Lee, Shin-Wha, a professor at Korea University, explained that due to historical, political, and military conflicts and due to nationalist sentiment, Northeast Asian states, which face a rapidly changing security environment, have been unable to establish independent relationships or reach sustainable levels cooperation among themselves. She proposed constructing institutions for multilateral cooperation as a solution. Specifically, she suggested that a middle power like Korea should facilitate regional cooperation among Northeast Asian states so that they may effectively share ideas and values. On the other hand, considering the high possibility of abrupt initiation of military conflicts in the Korean peninsula, she also highlighted the importance of cooperating with the US and solidifying the US-Korea alliance.
