On August 25th 2018, the East Asia Institute hosted its third regional workshop for the “Rising China and New Civilization in the Asia Pacific” research project. The workshop, which was held at the Grand Hyatt hotel in Beijing, brought together the Korean and Chinese research teams to present and discuss their preliminary draft papers. The workshop was divided into four sessions on China’s economy, energy and the environment, technology, and security. Participants discussed a variety of issues and trends including potential scenarios for the US-China trade war, technological developments in AI and clean energy, military spending and strategy, and gaps in regional economic development and wealth concentration. The first joint report resulting from this ambitious research endeavor is slated to be presented at an international conference in November 2018 in Seoul.
