[KF Korea Workshop 2] Tasks ahead and Prospects for the Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula
The KF Korea Workshop is hosted by the Korea Foundation and organized by the East Asia Institute to promote and share understanding of Korean social, political, and economic issues among international residents in Korea.
For the third lecture of our 2018 2nd KF Korea Workshop Series, EAI and the Korea Foundation invited Dr. Sang Hyun Lee, a senior researcher at the Sejong Institute to present on the topic “Tasks ahead and prospects for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.” Dr. Lee is currently serving as the president of the Korea Nuclear Policy Society and a research fellow at the Word Peace Forum. His research interests includeinternational politics and security, military strategy, ROK-US relations, and North Korean issues.
Dr. Lee described the problems that must be resolved in order to achieve denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, referring to precedents set by other countriesaround the world. He emphasized the importance of setting a denuclearization timeline and method that takes into consideration the unique conditions of North Korea. He also underscored the significance of building consensus on the definition of ‘regime security’ demanded by North Korea as a prerequisite for denuclearization and conducting an accurate review on the complete dismantlement of nuclear facilities. Dr. Lee discussed the technical problems that may arise duringthe review process and talked about the tasks ahead for South Korea, such as setting a denuclearization timeline, conducting a comprehensive analysis ofthe precedent set byKEDO, and understandingthe statusquo after the US-North Korea summit.
