The Expert Seminar with Prof. Matthew A. Shapiro

  • 2014-12-18

The EAI held an Expert Seminar on the topic of “International Collaboration and Green Technology Generation” with Professor Matthew A. Shapiro on Thursday, December 18, 2014. Professor Shapiro is a 2014 EAI Fellow and an assistant professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology. At the seminar, he presented a network analysis and research evidence to analyze international collaboration regarding green technology among Korea, Taiwan, Japan and China. Based on the examination of patents, his research results points to the existence of Green R&D clusters and that Taiwan, Japan and China fall into the same cluster. While Korea belongs to another cluster, which reflects the tendency toward collaboration among those three countries. He also commented that concerns about yellow dust and nuclear power had led the four countries to form the same R&D cluster based on alternative energy patents. However, clusters on environmental purification and protection patents proved that they lack regional focus on clean-up and pollution. In conclusion, Professor Shapiro asserted that the collaborative R&D conducted individually among scientists and researchers consistently contributes to the multilateral goals concerning the existing Northeast Asian environmental regime.
