The East Asia Institute (EAI) has conducted an annual public opinion survey since 2013, to gauge South Korean public's perceptions of foreign affairs. This year's survey was conducted in August 2024 as an online survey of South Korean people and experts in international affairs. EAI presented the results of the survey on the Korean public's perceptions of Japan and the ROK-Japan relations at an in-person press conference. In addition, experts on the ROK-Japan relations from both countries analyzed the survey results in depth and discussed the future development of the relations.

With the friendly relations between the governments have continued to improve over the past year following the Korean government's proactive measures for forced labor victims, issues such as the waste water release from Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, controversy over Line Yahoo stakes, designation of Sado Mine as UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the controversy over the perception of the Japanese colonial period by Korean high-rankiing government officials, have connected to a polarization of domestic politics. Through this opinion poll, EAI aims to identify how numerous variables including generation, ideology, and political party support interact with perceptions of Japan and bilateral relations, in order to help shape future-oriented bilateral relations.

You can access the results of the survey and their analysis through publications from EAI.
