 The South Korea-U.S.-Japan Trilateral Summit |

In light of the South Korea-U.S.-Japan trilateral summit in the Hague on March 25, EAI published a special commentary series by Chaesung Chun and Won-Deog Lee to discuss its implications to the current and future regional dynamics in East Asia. Chaesung Chun points out that the summit took place during a time when the U.S. is simultaneously faced by multiple challenges from East Europe, the Middle East and East Asia. From a strategic standpoint, he argues that Seoul should pursue Korea-U.S.-Japan trilateral cooperation to the same degree that it attempts to resolve Tokyo's problematic perception of history. With respect to South Korea-Japan relations, Won-Deog Lee points out how mutual misperceptions over Japan's move to the right and Korea's leaning toward China on the issue of history can be equally problematic. To break the current trend, he urges the two countries to engage each other at both societal and governmental levels.
