Latest Issue of JEAS is Released
EAI has issued Vol. 14, No. 1 of the JEAS, featuring articles and book reviews on a range of topics from organizational clientelism to Chinese cultural history. In a study based on field interviews and firm-level surveys, three authors argue that dictators nurture clientelistic ties with social groups to facilitate their rule, a previously overlooked function of authoritarian legislatures. Also in this issue, two articles explore patterns of party switching in Taiwan that have played an important role in the development and stability of its party system and the programmatic linkages between political parties in South Korea, respectively. This edition also contains five book reviews from prominent scholars on works about Chinese resource diplomacy in Africa and social networks in Beijing and Taipei, among other writings.

EAI invited Evelyn Goh, professor at Australian National University, on March 31 to speak with a group of South Korean experts about the topic of her new book, entitled "The Struggle for Order: Hegemony, Hierarchy, and Transition in Post-Cold War East Asia." She presented her thoughts on the current East Asia political order, which remains dominated by the U.S. hegemon despite the emergence of China. Goh described this setting as an 'order transition' by looking into four issue areas; institutions, conflicts, regionalism and memory. Within the hierarchical order provided by the U.S., she argued that states such as Korea, Japan and the ASEAN countries prefer the current status quo even with its flaws.
