  North Korea Policy Conference 2013
The political and security environment surrounding Korea and the East Asian region is in a constant state of flux. As such, it is in the best interest of scholars, policymakers, and government officials to constantly reassess these issues and build a deeper understanding of the constant changes in the political and security terms surrounding the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, the East Asia Institute(EAI) with the U.S. Embassy and Department of Public Affairs of Sungkyunkwan University held the North Korea Policy Conference 2013 on May 21 at Sungkyunkwan University. At this conference, North Korean human rights issues and the U.S.-Korea future policy coordination measures toward North Korea were discussed to enhance the public understanding of the complex nature behind policymaking process toward North Korea.

Smart Q&A on the Future of U.S.-ROK Alliance
Following South Korean President Park Geun-hye's visit to Washington, DC in May, which marked the 60-year anniversary celebrations for the military alliance between the United States and South Korea, EAI invited Dr. Terence Roehrig of the U.S. Naval War College to talk about the future direction of the U.S.-ROK alliance, potential challenges, and feasible policy recommendations for the South Korean government to further strengthen the current state of the U.S.-ROK alliance.
Smart Talk with Abraham M. Denmark
EAI held its 32nd Smart Talk Forum with Abraham M. Denmark, Vice President for the Political and Security Affairs at the National Bureau of Asian Research(NBR), on May 10, 2013. During the forum, Denmark and the participants discussed the future of the U.S. alliances and partnerships in Asia and future implications for the Korean Peninsula.

2013 Global Poll by BBC World ServiceㆍGlobeScanㆍEAI
EAI, as a representative institute from Korea, released the survey results of the 2013 Global Poll, conducted together with BBC World Service and GlobeScan. The poll asked respondents to rate a total of 17 countries on whether their influence in the world is positive or negative. According the survey, Germany gained the position of the most favorably viewed country, followed by Canada and the United Kingdom. This year, South Korea, which has previously been ranked at 12th among the 17 countries in terms of positive ratings, saw its positive ratings improved to 10th place for the first time. China and Japan were the two of the most worsened countries in their country ratings.

Korea-Japan Future Dialogue
On May 11, 2013, Genron NPO and the EAI co-hosted Korea-Japan Future Dialogue in the Nippon Press Center Hall, Japan. Topics such as Korea-Japan relations perceived by public opinion, sources of conflict and cooperation in Korea-Japan relations, and prospects of Korea-Japan cooperation in transforming East Asia were discussed in details. At the conference, non-governmental approaches that promote cooperation between South Korea and Japan were debated in details.
KF-EAI Korea Friendship Project Explanatory Session and Commencement of Academicus
EAI held "KF-EAI Korea Friendship" Project Explanatory Sessions at the Korea Foundation Cultural Center seminar room on May 20 and at the New Millennium Hall in Yonsei University on May 27. The Korea Friendship project is for the international students residing in Korea and consists of three programs: 1) "KF Academicus," which is made up of eight lecture series focusing on exploring various aspects of the Korean society, 2) "KF Communicus," which focuses on activities that promote discussion with the Korean society, and 3) "KF Empathicus," which provides international students networking opportunities. KF-EAI Korea Friendship Academicus starts off on June 18 at Eugene Investment & Securities Building in Yeouido.
Apply for the EAI Fellows Program 2013-2014
Applications for the EAI Fellows Program 2013-14 are open for submission until July 15, 2013. This program offers selected fellows the opportunity to present seminars and lectures, based on an unpublished article on current regional issues, at two or more partner institutions in East Asia.
