“Fostering Mutual Appreciation for Korea among International Students”
2015 KF-EAI Korea Friendship Academicus Eight Lecture Series
As part of the first program of the KF-EAI Korea Friendship Project, “Academicus: Listening to Korea,” eight lectures were held for international students living in Korea at Eugene Investment and Securities Building from September 7 to 23. These lectures were about Korean Music (Kwak Eun-Ah, Gayageum virtuoso), Korean Politics (Choi Jae-Cheon, Member of the National Assembly), Korean Education (Han Bi-Ya, Principal of Global Citizenship School), Korean Mass Media (Kang In-Sun, Journalist), Korean Reunification (Jo Dong-Ho, North Korea Specialist), Korean Literature (Shin Hyung-Cheol, Literature Critic), Korean Enterprises (Song Gil-Young, Big-data Analyst), and Korean Economy (Kang Chan Soo, Finance Specialist). The Korea Friendship Project is in its third year and there are 97 international students participating this year.
“Changing Percetion of Korean National Identity over the Past 10 Years”
2015 Survey on Korean National Identity
The results of the “National Identity Survey” co-conducted by Korea University’s Asiatic Research Institute (ARI), Joong-Ang Ilbo and EAI were reported in the 7 September 2015 edition of Joong-Ang Ilbo on pages 1, 6 and 7. This was the third time conducting this survey which consisted of more than 250 questions on nine different areas including ethnicity, citizenship, history, and security issues. (in Korean)
“Sharing Korea’s Experience of Democracy with the World”
The “Building Civil Society Capacity in Myanmar” program is jointly sponsored by EAI and the National Endowment for Democracy, which aims to support the research institutions in Myanmar for their institutional and research capacities. The second workshop was held on September 14-15 in Yangon, Myanmar at the Sandhi Governance Institute.
“50 Years of Korea-Japan Ties, Shedding Light on Korea-Japan Relations”
On September 9, EAI, in partnership with Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies, held a seminar to understand the current relations between Korea and Japan and discuss global, regional, and domestic measures to improve it. (in Korean)
Irish Ambassador to the ROK Visits EAI
EAI held a roundtable discussion with Aingeal O’Donoghue, the Irish Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, on September 7 to discuss the outcomes and future direction of the Northern Ireland peace process that was based on the Good Friday Agreement and policy implications for the inter-Korean relations and unification process. “Creating Co-evolution of the Korea-Japan Relations for a New Era”
In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of Korean independence and 50th anniversary of normalization of Korea-Japan relations, EAI published a special report to evaluate the Korea-Japan relations as it faces new challenges in the evolving East Asian order in the 21st century and to suggest sustainable objectives, shared vision, values, and responsibilities in the long run. “The Architecture of the East Asian Order in the Age of Complexity”
In his column, EAI Chairman Young-Sun Ha points out that U.S.-China relations are entering a new “Chimerica” era, and he emphasizes that in order for the two countries to direct the growing competition and conflict into a more progressive relationship, there is the necessity for construction of a new East Asian order to develop alongside the U.S. and China in a multi-dimensional way.
“‘Bonanza’ Argument Persuading the Public?”
The Park Geun-hye administration claimed that unification of the Korean Peninsula would be an economic “bonanza” for South Korea, but support for that policy has waned as of late according to an EAI survey. Dr. Han Wool Jeong (Chief of EAI Public Opinion Research Unit) suggests that the government can salvage its policy by improving inter-Korean ties, focusing on the economy, and rekindling the relationship between the ruling party and the administration.
Result of Selection for the EAI Fellows Program 2015-2016
EAI has announced the selection result of the “Fellows Program on Peace, Governance, and Development in East Asia” for the academic year 2015-2016, made possible by the generous support of the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange of Taiwan, YBM/KIS, an education institute of Korea, and W1° of EAI’s supports group. EAI Fellows will visit East Asia to present papers at seminars and give lectures, based on an unpublished article related to current issues submitted solely for the purpose of the EAI Fellows Program.
