MacArthur Grantees' Inaugural Singapore Meeting

The MacArthur Foundation and 27 Grantees held the Inaugural MacArthur Grantees' Meeting and the Official Launch of the MacArthur Asia Security Initiative (ASI) from 28th to 29th May 2009. The S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University organized this Inaugural Meeting. The EAI's ASI Program Chair Prof. Chun Chaesung and Prof. Kim Byung-Kook attended this meeting.

EAI Asia Security Initiative Updates
GlobalNet21 Forum
The EAI hosted its 16th GlobalNet21 Forum with Stephen Haggard (UCSD) talking about "The Political Economy of North Korea: Strategic Implications." After the presentation, the panel with Prof. Lee Guen (SNU-GSIS), Assemblyman Hong Jungwook (GNP), Lim Byeong-cheol of the Unification Ministry and Prof. Chun Chaesung (SNU) actively discussed the issues raised.

Smart Talk 2: Jack Pritchard, President of KEI
The 2nd Smart Talk took place on July 1st with Jack Pritchard, President of KEI. Mr. Pritchard was former Ambassador Pritchard served as ambassador and special envoy for negotiations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and United States representative to the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization in the administration of President George W. Bush from April 2001 until September 2003.

Kim Hyun-Chong, former Minister for Trade of the Republic of Korea took part in the EAI's Roundtable discussion on June 25th to discuss about the KORUS FTA. He argued that South Korea needs to perform an active reform policy by ratifying the FTA through possible roadmaps.

2009 EAI Global Academy and EAI Fellows Program

 In May the EAI launched its Global Academy for 2009

 The 3rd Seminar took place with EAI Fellows. In the 3rd seminar Jonathan Schwartz (State University of New York,New Paltz) spoke on "Effectively Controlling Infectious Disease Outbreaks: Comparing Taiwanese and Chinese Responses to SARS."

 The 3rd and 4th Global Academy seminars were held with Giwook Shin discussing "Historical Disputes and Reconciliation in Northeast Asia: Can the United States Play a Role?" and Jonathan Schwartz presenting for the 4th Global Academy.

Other News:

 Applications are now open for the second Northeast Asia Security Dialogue (NASD) which is planned to be held in Seoul in September 2009. We are looking for graduate students currently enrolled in universities in Korea (masters and doctoral programs).
