"Populism, a Threat to the Existing International Order?" |
A populist wave has swept across Europe and the U.S. The rise of left-wing parties in Greece and Spain, the strengthened right-wing populist parties in Austria and Hungary, the British vote to leave the EU, and the rise of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders in the U.S. all demonstrate that traditional supporters of mainstream political parties feel disconnected and are turning toward the appeals of populism. Emphasizing that the failure of mainstream political parties to address the root causes of social discontent is the main cause of the rise of populism, Sook Jong Lee argues that, rather than dismissing populists completely, it is necessary to invite populist parties to join a coalition. In doing so, Lee points out that it is imperative to reform current global governance so that it is more democratic and effective.
