My name is Pauliina Piirainen, and I am originally from Finland. Currently, I am a second-semester graduate student at Yonsei University Graduate School of International Studies, where I am pursuing a double major in International Finance and East Asian Studies. My academic interests lie primarily in the dynamics of Korea-EU and Korea-Japan relations, with a particular focus on trade. This interest has guided much of my academic journey, and I am eager to continue exploring these areas as I progress in my studies.

This past winter, I had the privilege of interning at the East Asia Institute (EAI) in Seoul, South Korea, for two months. This internship provided me with a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the workings of a Korean think tank, an experience that I believe will be instrumental in shaping both my future academic pursuits and my professional career. My time at EAI was incredibly insightful and offered me a practical perspective on how research and policy analysis are conducted in the context of East Asian international relations.

During the two months of my internship, I had the opportunity to support EAI staff in various capacities. My responsibilities included tasks such as translation, research, copyediting, and proofreading. These tasks allowed me to apply the knowledge and skills I have developed throughout my academic career in a real-world setting. Moreover, I was able to enhance my understanding of the intricacies involved in international relations and policy research, which are critical to my field of study.

One of the highlights of my internship was participating in the 6th EAI Academy session, where I had the chance to attend lectures delivered by esteemed professors from leading universities. The sessions focused on democracy in Korea, and this experience provided me with invaluable insights into the political landscape of the region. Learning directly from experts in the field was a remarkable opportunity that deepened my understanding of the complex dynamics at play in East Asian politics. Additionally, I gained practical experience in event preparation and management, as I was involved in organizing and participating in several events hosted by EAI.

I am appreciative of the opportunity to apply my academic knowledge in such a dynamic and practical environment. This internship not only provided me with professional exposure but also allowed me to work closely with EAI researchers, learning from their expertise and gaining new perspectives on international relations. I am grateful for having been selected for this internship, which I believe will significantly contribute to my academic and professional development moving forward.
