On October 27, 2017, EAI held an expert roundtable with Mr. Carter Malkasian, Special Assistant for Strategy, US Chairman of JCS, to address the South Korean perceptions on the current issues resulting from the North Korean nuclear crisis. Mr. Malkasian argues that, despite the U.S. capability to retaliate in case of a North Korean attack, the priority is to pursue a diplomatic channel and to reassure the U.S. commitment in maintaining its alliance with the Republic of Korea. The participants primarily focused on the need of a new roadmap to solve the crisis, on the South Korean concerns to be cut off from an eventual agreement between the United States and North Korea, and on South Korea representing a primary threat to Pyongyang’s survival.
