On November 24 and 25, East Asia Institute (EAI) held an international forum on “Empowering Community of Democracies” in cooperation with the Asia Democracy Network (ADN). Supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Republic of Korea, the forum invited renowned scholars, activists, and experts from all over the world. The aim of the forum was to discuss action plans to empower the Community of Democracies, as well as an agenda for the upcoming 9th Community of Democracies Ministerial Conference and Civil Society Conference to be held in July 2015 in El Salvador.

On the first day, the participants discussed the urgent and emerging challenges in the fields of Freedom of Opinion and Expression, Education for Democracy, Enabling and Protecting Civil Society, Transparency, and Election, and action plans to enhance the effectiveness of international organizations such as the Community of Democracies. Additionally, they considered the role of the non-governmental organizations in overcoming challenges in each field. On the second day, the participants suggested and discussed general guidelines to build democracy assistance foundations in Asia based on the experiences of such foundations in the U.S. and Europe, and to strengthen the role of the Community of Democracies in Asia and beyond.
