Recent changes and reformations conducted in social and economic spheres under the regime of Kim Jong Un seem to signal that North Korea is working to build a "normal state." Yet it is still uncertain as to whether North Korea will successfully manage to overcome the "traditional North Korean" dilemmas, as it is beginning to appear that Kim Jong Un’s liberal leadership is surviving solely on its drive towards reforms. Chae-Yeon Kang of the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies at Seoul National University argues that Kim Jong Un is currently seeking a brand new leadership style in politics, the economy, and culture by fighting the old and bringing in the new. Professor Kang adds, "The premise under which North Korea may become a ‘normal state’ rests on recovering trust and joining international society. It is important for North Korea to keep its promises, recover trust in its relationships with other states, stop its chronic buck-passing, and remain accountable for its actions." [Read Commentary]
