Decoding India’s 2024 National Elections

Niranjan Sahoo, Senior Fellow at the Observer Research Foundation, explores the key issues and implications regarding India’s 2024 national election, which is highly likely to result in a victory for the the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Amid economic challenges, welfare populism is once again taking center stage for both the ruling party and the opposition, as they competitively increase their provision of public goods. Nevertheless, the incumbent party's electoral apparatus and the weaponization of state instruments against opposition leaders grant its coalition an asymmetrical advantage.
